Y’all I get really nervous about the start of new school semesters. Despite having been to sooo many first days in my life, I still get a little anxious. In Philippians, Paul shares some wisdom for this particular emotion in 4:6-7. He writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Now, I know that advice is much easier said than done. It’s hard not to focus on whatever is worrying us, but that’s the key to prayer. The act of praying in and of itself forces us to turn our focus to God. We lay down those worries in favor of God’s promises. But those promises aren’t only true when our heads are bowed – they stand up against all of the stressors, big and small, in our everyday life. When we make the choice to continually present our lives to the Lord, He blesses us with a peace that is beyond anything we can understand. Leonard Sweet uses this breath prayer to summarize these verses: “Anxious, nothing. Prayerful, everything. Thankful, anything. Then, Peace.” I hope that this week, at the outset of the semester, this prayer will bring you God’s peace.
